Q My budgie is very listless – I think he could be mourning the loss of his friend who died two months ago. Olivia Kerrell, 56, Brighton

A I believe all animals have the capacity to miss a close companion and some are more deeply affected by bereavement than others. After two months I would seek the opinion of your vet to make sure your budgie’s symptoms are not due to a physical illness. He may be bored so give him new toys and swap them, every few days. Try to spend a little more time with him, letting him out of his cage for human companionship.
