Founded in 1811, Astoria in Oregon is one of the oldest US towns west of the Rockies. Where the 1,243 mile Columbia River flows into the Pacific, the Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered here in 1805-6 on their exploratio­n of western US. A popular tourist town, it has sealions living under a riverfront brewery built on stilts.

There’s also the 125ft viewing column on 600ft Coxcomb Hill and 4.1 mile Astoria–Megler Bridge to Washington State. The Goonies and Free Willy were shot here too – so have a whale of a time. NT Best Value for Money,
