CHIEFS TORMENTED

-

EXETER director of rugby Rob Baxter accepted that his side’s European campaign was virtually over as they crashed to a 27-19 defeat.

Gloucester were deserved winners with tries from Willi Heinz, Jaco Visagie and Ben Morgan as Danny Cipriani kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Exeter’s tries came from

Nic White, Tom Lawday and Don Armand but they remain bottom of Pool 2 with three points from three games.

“There was no clarity of thinking and we made error after error,” Baxter said. “The repercussions from this game will take a lot of assessing.”

Gloucester head coach Johan Ackermann said: “The team has grown tremendously and the players now have more belief so hopefully we are closing gaps.” WASPS’ hopes of European Champions Cup progression were all but ended after suffering a 24-16 loss to Toulouse at the Ricoh Arena.

The under-pressure Coventry-based side needed to beat an in-form Toulouse, having lost to Leinster and drawn with Bath in their opening two fixtures in Pool 1. But they fell to their sixth defeat in seven games thanks to tries from Cheslin Kolbe and Sofiane Guitoune (above) plus 14 points from the boot of Thomas Ramos.
