‘BRAZIL STILL MORE RACIST’

- BY TONY STENSON

» BRIGHTON’S Brazilian defender Bernardo says he has suffered racist abuse – but only in his own country.

Since moving to Austria in 2016 and then

Germany before a £9million move to the Premier League, he’s loved Europe’s diversity.

Bernardo (right), who takes on Chelsea today, recalls a very different culture in his native land.

The 23-year-old said: “In my school, I was the only black guy. It bothered me. My parents could afford to pay for my education... in school I was with the rich kids.

“In training I was with the poor kids.

“I came across more prejudice in Brazil but not in Austria, Germany and England.

“Brazil, from outside, looks like a racially mixed country. But we were one of the last nations to quit slavery.

“In London you see people from the most different cultures living together and, say, eating in a nice restaurant or driving a nice car. But in Brazil, no.”
