Secrets of ancient tomb uncovered
AN ancient tomb which had not been seen by humans for thousands of years was unveiled in Egypt yesterday.
Dating back 4,400 years, it is decorated with amazingly well-preserved hieroglyphs and statues of pharaohs.
A last layer of debris was removed on Thursday.
Five shafts were found – four of which are sealed.
Officials expect there to be more discoveries when archaeologists excavate the site further in coming months.
The tomb was found in a buried ridge at the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, to the south of Cairo.
Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the site had been not been touched for millennia.
He said it was “one of a kind in the last decades”. The tomb dates from the rule of Neferirkare Kakai in the mid 25th century BC.
