Corrie Bev: Obsessed fan tried to snip off my hair
It goes with the job, she says
CORRIE legend Beverley Callard says fans get so obsessed with her character that one even lunged at her to cut off a lock of hair.
“Oh gosh, I’ve encountered some crazy incidents in my time,” said the actress, who has played glamorous Liz McDonald for 30 years. “A few years ago, I was getting out of my car
and I saw this glinting in the sunshine. I turned and a man was wielding a great big pair of scissors. He was trying to get a lock of my hair.
“I was pretty shocked but could see he meant no harm.
“He just wanted a piece of Liz. It goes with the job.”
As Corrie enters its 60th year next year, Beverley, 61, said: “I love that I’m in my 60s and Coronation Street will be in its 60s as well. The cast don’t know what the plan is for the anniversary. I do know that Liz will be at the forefront of it – and I can’t wait.”
Beverley has been open in the past about her battle with depression, which led her to contemplate suicide. But she said: “I’m really good at the moment. I’m still on medication and I think I’ll have to take it for the rest of my life, but I feel great.”
And she is about to take on a new role – as a feisty former pop star in upcoming play The Thunder Girls.
She said: “I love Coronation Street and I don’t have to leave to go back on stage. I have the best of both worlds.”
