Steel ‘must quit’ over abuse failure
A CAMPAIGNER for child abuse victims has called on ex-Lib Dems leader David Steel to quit the Lords after failing to expose paedophile MP Cyril Smith.
Former Labour MP Simon Danczuk said he should also leave the Privy Council. Lord Steel has been suspended by his party. Mr Danczuk said: “You can’t have a legislator who turns a blind eye to child abuse. He can’t be made to stand down from the Lords, but it would be the right thing to do.” Last week Lord Steel told the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse he asked the late MP in 1979 about claims he abused boys at a Rochdale hostel. He admitted “assuming” Smith had committed the offences but claimed it was “nothing to do with me”.
