HE GOT ONE THING RIGHT
David Cameron’s stupidest act was calling the EU referendum.
It’s up there with Tony Blair’s Iraq War for wrapping a political legacy in a concrete overcoat and consigning it to the depths.
But the bravest thing Cameron ever did was to introduce same-sex marriage.
I was in Manchester when he chose to make the announcement in 2011 to the most hostile audience he could find, the elderly gentry who provide ballast for Tory conferences.
Cameron also feared a public backlash but the public just shrugged its shoulders. Now
LGBT rights are so firmly embedded, they even stretch to British foreign policy.
Asia minister Mark Field revealed that last week he wrote to Brunei’s government to express UK outrage at death by stoning as a punishment for gay sex.
And he’s set aside £5.6million to secretly fund LGBT reform in Commonwealth countries to decriminalise same-sex relationships.
That, Dave, should make us proud to be British. The Brexit mess you created doesn’t.
