David Cameron’s stu­pid­est act was call­ing the EU ref­er­en­dum.

It’s up there with Tony Blair’s Iraq War for wrap­ping a po­lit­i­cal legacy in a con­crete over­coat and con­sign­ing it to the depths.

But the bravest thing Cameron ever did was to in­tro­duce same-sex mar­riage.

I was in Manch­ester when he chose to make the an­nounce­ment in 2011 to the most hos­tile au­di­ence he could find, the el­derly gen­try who pro­vide bal­last for Tory con­fer­ences.

Cameron also feared a public back­lash but the public just shrugged its shoul­ders. Now

LGBT rights are so firmly em­bed­ded, they even stretch to Bri­tish for­eign pol­icy.

Asia min­is­ter Mark Field re­vealed that last week he wrote to Brunei’s gov­ern­ment to ex­press UK out­rage at death by ston­ing as a pun­ish­ment for gay sex.

And he’s set aside £5.6mil­lion to se­cretly fund LGBT re­form in Com­mon­wealth coun­tries to de­crim­i­nalise same-sex re­la­tion­ships.

That, Dave, should make us proud to be Bri­tish. The Brexit mess you cre­ated doesn’t.
