‘Lamps & Co can be top-six bosses’

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - Sports -

AN ENGLISH coach will be managing a top-six Premier League side soon, according to Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

He is confident that, if young managers like Derby’s Frank Lampard keep progressing, they will make the breakthrough.

Southgate presented Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder with the LMA Manager of the Year Award last week – and is delighted homegrown bosses are making a splash.

“I had a good chat with Chris the other night and I messaged Frank Lampard and Dean Smith at Aston Villa. Am I comfortable supporting English managers and coaches? One hundred per cent. We have some of the best foreign managers in the world here. But sometimes we are quick to look abroad when there are really outstanding, young English guys coming through.

“At the World Cup, I felt I had a responsibility for English coaches as much as I did for the team. At the moment, managing a top-six club wouldn’t be so easy for these guys, but

I see that happening in time.”
