DONALD Trump will become the first head of state to meet Japan’s new emperor tomorrow as guest of honour at an Imperial Palace banquet.

Emperor Naruhito – who took over on May 1 after his father stepped down – will welcome the US President to Tokyo.

An earthquake hit the city yesterday, shortly before Mr Trump arrived with wife Melania. It is his second visit in 18 months.

With tensions high over trade – and threats of crippling US tariffs on cars and car parts – Mr Trump told business leaders Japan “has had a substantial edge for many, many years”.

While there he will present a 5ft Trump Cup at a sumo wrestling contest.

Emperor Naruhito, 59, is the son of 85-year-old Akihito, the first Japanese leader to abdicate in almost two centuries.
