‘Loophole’ to cost disabled carers dear

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - News - BY KEIR MUDIE

THOUSANDS of disabled carers face losing around £63 a month if they switch to Unversal Credit.

They can currently claim Employment Support Allowance and a carer premium but if they have a change of circumstance, such as moving home, must transfer to UC.

Under its rules they won’t get both payments.

Margaret Greenwood, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said: “Disabled people often provide vital care for partners, friends, or family.

“This is another example of the way Universal Credit is failing disabled people and is acting as a vehicle for cuts.”

Around 55,000 ill or disabled people receive Employment and Support Allowance while carers.
