Melissa bids to swim UK’s longest river
A NURSE has vowed to swim the UK’s longest river in just three weeks.
Melissa Compton, 39, started her epic journey along the length of the 220-mile Severn this week.
If she pulls it off she will be the first woman to swim the entirety of the river and the first person to do it without a wetsuit.
She began from the Severn’s source on a Welsh mountain and hopes to reach the Bristol Channel.
Melissa, an intensive care nurse at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, said: “I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knee.
“A friend suggested swimming. Now the River Severn has become almost like a second home.”
So far Melissa has raised almost £2,000 for charity Versus Arthritis.
