don’t think I could do as many as my mum and dad though – I don’t think we can shoot for nine.

“Knowing my luck, we’ll probably end up having quadruplets like Chesney, but we’ll see.

“Briony has a lot she wants to do in her career first. Neither of us feel ready. Touch wood, we’ve got time on our hands.”

Before settling into family life, they plan a motorbike trip to Italy.

Sam revealed: “I’ve always loved motorbikes – when I watched the biker TV show Sons of Anarchy, I thought, ‘I’m getting one!’

“I bought a HarleyDavidson and now we want to travel round northern Italy on it together. The roads are so big and empty – they go right through the mountains. It would be breathtaking. You could pack light and see a bit of the country.”

This week sees Gemma’s fiery mum Bernie, played by Jane Hazlegrove, arrive on the Street and cause trouble for Chesney – by trying to seduce him.

Sam said: “Jane is a lovely woman. She’s a bit bonkers, but in a nice way. Me and Dolly get on with her really well, she fits right in.

“There’s a scene where she is naked and tries to seduce Chesney who, as usual, acts like an old man. It’s very Corrie, very funny.”

Sam grew up on Coronation Street, joining the cast when he was 10. Unlike many child actors, he has stayed down to earth – something he says is down to his close-knit family.

He said: “It’s important not to take yourself too seriously.

“I can see how it can get to you, especially as a child actor. It’s not a normal upbringing. I came into Corrie with some huge characters – Les Battersby [Bruce Jones] and Cilla Battersby-Brown [Wendi Peters].

“But my parents didn’t let me take it too seriously and I’ve kept that.

“I’m very close to my elder brother Joe – he’s three years older than me. We’re like peas in a pod. He’s always kept me very grounded.

“There have been times I’ve said things that are a bit above my station. He always brings me down.”

Sam is still very close to his huge family. He said: “You never feel alone with such a large family. You’ve always got someone there for you.

“We look out for one another. It’s the same at Coronation Street. It’s another huge family. I absolutely love it.”
