MP’s plea for a shot in the arm over TB
AN MP wants universal tuberculosis vaccination brought back as cases of the lung disease rise.
The BCG vaccine, once given to all children under 16 at a cost of £3 per dose, has not been routinely administered since 2005.
One person died of the illness last year in Wales, and in London – where 2,200 of 5,200 annual cases were diagnosed – only 22 of the 32 local boroughs offered the vaccination.
Craig Mackinlay, Tory MP for South Thanet, said: “Routine vaccination should be the norm.”
A Department of Health spokesman said: “We target those most at risk from exposure.”
