Hero Piggott honoured by hometown
JOCKEY legend Lester Piggott unveils a “stunning” bronze statue of himself today.
The showcase moment comes 71 years to the day after the veteran, now 83, rode the first of 4,493 career winners.
The ceremony, in Piggott’s hometown of Wantage, Oxon, comes ahead of an exhibition at the local Vale and Downland Museum celebrating his achievements.
Sculptor William Newton created the lifesize work, which will stand in the museum courtyard.
This is the third of nine identical statues being placed around the country to celebrate each of his record nine Derby wins.
The first was unveiled at Epsom by the Queen on Derby Day on June 1.
