WELD IS SHOWING HIS METTLE

-

THE Dermot Weld-trained Tarnawa took the honours with victory in the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks Stakes at Cork yesterday.

Just over two months after she finished down the field in the Epsom Oaks, the Aga Khanowned filly bounced back to form under Chris Hayes.

She was travelling easily when she got to the front just under two furlongs from home and had little difficulty in defeating Simply Perfect by two and a half lengths.

The rest of the card belonged to Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning who joined forces for a treble.

The pick of their three winners was Flight Risk who won the Listed Platinum Stakes in style.

The evergreen eight-year-old, who won his first race at this track in October 2014, was just much too good for these rivals. Flight Risk settled this race in just a few strides when quickening to the front with over a furlong to run.

Earlier Arranmore bagged a deserved success in the two-year-old maiden.

He had filled the runner-up spot on his first two runs and took advantage of his easiest assignment to date to get home by a head. In this race Donagh O’Connor took a horror fall from Unconscious Mind at halfway and he had to go to hospital for observation.

However, he was reported to be conscious and moving all his limbs when he left the track. The Bolger treble was completed by the French import Bopedro who looked good when winning the seven furlong handicap. GORDON ELLIOTT is considering a crack at next month’s Guinness Kerry National with Ravenhill.

The useful novice will head to Listowel looking to build on a fine fifth in last month’s Galway Plate.
