‘We need spirit of Sir Bobby’

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - Sports - BY RICHARD EDWARDS

THE 20th anniversary of Sir Bobby Robson taking over at Newcastle occurs on September 2.

And such is the state of the mess at St James’ Park, Toon fans are still talking about it today.

Former fans’ favourite Warren Barton was at Norwich last weekend for Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat.

What he saw summed up the current mood at a club going nowhere at breakneck speed.

Barton said: “It shows where Newcastle are that we’re still talking about Sir Bobby doing what he did.

“We had one point after something like seven games [in the 1999/2000 season], then he comes in and wins his first home game 8-0. Two years later, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

“He didn’t have millions to buy whoever he wanted, but he made the most of what he had.”

Newcastle fans will be heading to Tottenham’s stadium this afternoon fearing the worst.

“I looked at Steve Bruce on the touchline at Carrow Road and he seemed to be a bit downbeat,” said Barton.

“I looked at some of players and no one was shouting or motivating. It needs someone to get hold of that club.”
