McCarthy amazed by winger

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - Sport - BY PAUL O’HEHIR

JAMES McCLEAN’s determination and work ethic is ‘beyond exceptional’, according to Mick McCarthy.

The Stoke City man put his club’s struggles behind him to play a key role in Ireland’s fight back against Switzerland.

He showed great tenacity to close down Swiss right wing-back Kevin Mbabu in the dying stages, robbing him of possession before crossing for David McGoldrick’s goal.

“He was amazing,” purred McCarthy who will decide in his own mind later today whether to play or rest the winger against Bulgaria on Tuesday.

“It was incredible. I mean the shift he put in – that guy (Mbabu) was quick enough, so for James to run back and nick it off him was amazing.”

McClean often saves his best work for the green shirt and McCarthy has yet to substitute him in a game.

“His pride, his desire to play for Ireland is incredible,” said the Ireland boss. “He gets full support from the crowd, gets a real lift from it, a real buzz from it.

“He’s a fabulous pro. He works his socks off and he doesn’t drink. He’s a great athlete and a pleasure to have in the squad.”
