Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland)

It’s up to us to keep the weak safe

-

Covid is no respecter of status. As it proved yesterday when it infected the man in charge of the nation’s health. A cynic might suggest that for Sajid Javid to test positive just 48 hours before Freedom Day shows that the virus may even have a sense of humour.

But there is nothing funny about anyone catching Covid. And we wish Mr Javid, and everyone who has got it, a full and speedy recovery.

Yet it was this Health Secretary who was most bullish about opening up tomorrow.

Now that he has a few days stuck at home, he might like to reflect on the wisdom of that.

The Sunday Mirror wants Covid restrictions lifted as soon as possible.

We want to see pubs doing a roaring trade, the events industry welcoming crowds, and an economy cut off at the knees back on its feet.

What we do not want is the country plunged into another lockdown because once again Boris Johnson has been too rash.

The PM says it is up to us to take personal responsibilty. That will now be our only protection to fall back on against this disease.

Our poll today suggests we will do just that. Most of us will cotntinue to wear masks in enclosed spaces whether required or not. Most will socially distance. Most will travel no further than we need.

And if we do not do so for ourselves, we should do it for the disabled and vulnerable, for children at risk of Long Covid, and to protect our NHS.

We are not being killjoys when we say the way we behave tomorrow should not be so very different to how we act today.

Let’s enjoy life. Without it killing us.
