Senator slams wall of silence over murder

that is stopping people, I don’t know what it is.”

And she said she believes that unfortunately the mothers of those responsible probably can’t find it in their hearts to come forward and tell the Garda what their sons have done.

She added: “These boys who did this would have been reared in houses where the mothers wouldn’t have cared.

“It would be just great if someone rang up to tell the truth. They are leaving us here in limbo, we are broken-hearted.”

Fine Gael Senator Emer Currie welcomed the meeting between Mrs Quinn and Mr Harris.

She said: “She, like any mother, wants the truth to come out about what happened her son 14 years ago when he was lured and beaten to death in Co Monaghan.

“Breege has faced a wall of silence and the insult of lies during that time.

“She will never give up the hope of a breakthrough or her fight for truth and justice.

“Breege is relying on a criminal investigation for the truth to come out. It is inconceivable that other families would be deprived of that because of a de facto amnesty on Troubles killings.

“The door to justice must never be shut for any family for any reason.”

Mrs Quinn added that in some ways time has passed very slowly since her beloved son’s death.

She said: “Sometimes it feels it’s been forever and in other ways like yesterday, especially when people start talking to you about him. I used to sit, it would be around 1.30am or

2am and be looking at the back door because that was the time he would come in.

“I would just find myself sitting in the living room but he wasn’t going to come in. That went on for months.”

She revealed Paul was a happy, outgoing lad who was looking forward to his future.

Mrs Quinn added: “He would have been 34 [on Friday]. He would have been away driving a lorry, that’s what he wanted to do. That’s what his dad and his brother are doing.

“He was full of divilment. He had a great personality. Paul was always smiling and acting the fool.

“He would come here with his friends and would open the fridge and take out and make a fry for himself and his friends. The way you miss him in the house is unreal.”
