Let’s all learn from spirit of the Euros

-

So if you think back to a week ago, England lost a final of a cup. You may or may not be bothered about the sport, the country or the outcome, but for me the tournament was one of joy and that was only in part to do with the football.

Yes as an Englishman I wish we had managed to win but it was not to be. However, the previous month or so did something that sometimes only sport can do on so many levels. I loved the anticipation of family and friends about what was to come all the way through, not just the sport but the getting together as a group, working out whose house to go to, what Covid rules would allow, who was coming and if the weather would be garden friendly.

Then there was dusting off gazebos, making makeshift canopies so we could be outside and dry if it rained, what to eat at half-time and trying to get beers from the countries that were playing each time we watched.

The final result was a shame as I said before but the day was fabulous as not only did I get to watch it with my friends but, just like much of the tournament, my youngest and his mates were with us too as we all shared the dream and heartache together. It also brought back memories of when I was that age, the innocence of youth I guess but, more importantly, it reminded me that it’s OK to embrace being young occasionally even if it’s not the way experience (and sensibility) would usually lead me.

I hope the England team knows what it meant to all of us to get within touching distance of a dream and take pride in what they achieved for themselves, the country and my friends.

I believe, with the right attitude, we all can take that spirit into everyday life now and have a go at things that include all races, creeds and ages.

That would indeed be a winning legacy.

Until next week,

Kev
