Shangri-La, The Shard, London SE1
WHERE AND WHY?
It’s hard to miss the iconic 1,016ft Shard building, rising out of London’s skyline from almost any viewpoint in the capital.
But the best views come from inside its luxurious Shangri-La hotel, which starts 410ft above the ground on the building’s 34th floor.
The bedrooms and suites have floor to ceiling windows with truly spectacular vistas – particularly impressive after dark when the city outside is lit up.
Nestled a stone’s throw from the river, the five-star hotel is walking distance from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, Southwark Cathedral and plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants.
Also, London Bridge national rail and underground stations are right at the foot of the building, making it perfect for travelling from a distance or exploring the city on public transport.
COVID CHECK-IN
Coronavirus procedures were strict but not obstructive as plenty of staff were on hand to direct arriving guests and get them signed in as quickly as possible.
A one-way walking system and sanitisation stations made it feel safe but didn’t detract from the luxury feel as they have been done stylishly, in keeping with the hotel’s high-end feel.
ON THE MENU
After some shopping in nearby Borough Market we were ready for afternoon tea in TING restaurant and it didn’t disappoint.
The sweet and savoury baked delights looked almost too good to eat and traditional Chinese tea served over dry ice was a really special experience, covering the table in clouds of mist as we ate above the clouds outside.
Smoked salmon sandwiches on freshly baked bread and mini carrot cakes were a big hit, but at £59 per head – or £69 with champagne – it’s definitely only for a special occasion.
The evening menu of both traditional Asian and European dishes is equally spectacular.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE
Go up to the viewing gallery at the top of the building for the best views over the city. Then, back down to earth, wander along Tooley Street and cut through the More London development to Tower Bridge, and cross over the river to visit the Tower of London. The great location means you can reach so many places just on foot.
