I turned eco-warrior for sister

-

Teen Amani Aziz turned into an eco-warrior after pushing her baby sister’s buggy along a polluted road.

The 14-year-old has now made it her mission to improve air quality for kids in Liverpool – even persuading her GP dad Ahmer, 46, to switch to an electric car.

Amani has become a junior campaigner for the British Lung Foundation and started a Facebook page for her community to promote clean air.

She is also working with her school to bring in initiatives such as a walking bus and a car-free zone.

And her efforts have encouraged both children and teachers to swap cars for walking.

Mum Rachael, 44, said: “We were on our way to school and Amani told me she could taste the pollution when she was beneath a tree canopy overhanging the street.

air but we hadn’t realised that the tree cover itself could trap the pollutants from vehicle exhausts underneath it.

“When Amani did air quality monitoring in that area, the levels of nitrogen dioxide were illegally high.”

Rachael said the teenager had been affected by the death of London schoolgirl Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah and the role air pollution had played.

She said: “If something is unjust, she will really strive to sort it out.”

Amani, who has four younger siblings, said: “It really upset me that my sister was near the car exhausts and breathing in fumes that could be damaging her lungs.”
