GLENTORAN were pushed all the way before finally winning 3-2 away to Championship side Dergview United in the first round of the Irish Cup.
The Oval men looked to be in control against the Tyrone men when striker Robbie McDaid netted a first half brace. But Tommy Canning’s underdogs came storming back into it when Jamie Brown poked in a goal after the break before Graham Crown’s header levelled the scores with five minutes to go.
Debutant Sean Murray stepped up a minute later to spare the Glens’ blushes, blasting home a 30-yard shot that skidded off the wet surface and flew into the net for the winning goal.
Championship leaders Newry City made sure rivals and Premiership basement dwellers Warrenpoint Town wouldn’t enjoy any sort of Cup run, winning 2-1 at Milltown.
James Teelan’s cool finish opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half and they doubled their lead after the break through Fra Brennan. Warrenpoint sub Daniel McKenna got his side back into it with five minutes to go but it proved too little, too late.
Portadown didn’t have it all their own way against Limavady United but dug deep to come up with a 2-0 win at Shamrock Park. Adam Salley broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a header before Chris Lavery’s injurytime goal made sure of the victory.
Ballymena United, Carrick Rangers and Dungannon Swifts also won 2-0.
There were big victories for the other Premiership sides, with Coleraine winning 6-0 at home to Windmill Stars, Cliftonville battering Islandmagee 5-0 at Solitude and Larne victorious at Bangor on the same scoreline.
