The Bold Type
The Bold Type is set in a fictional magazine office in Manhattan, New York. Although “Scarlet magazine is strongly believed to be based on Cosmopolitan magazine as it was co-created by the publication’s former editor Joanna Coales.
She is also who the character of Jacqueline is meant to be based on as, just like she did in her years as editorin-chief, she treadmills her way through lunch...in heels...and takes no crap from anyone – especially the mostly-male board of trustees.
She is the mentor/mother figure for the three main characters – Sutton, Kat and Jane. They are milennials who are trying to make it in the media industry as a fashion stylist, a social media whizz and a writer respectively. They are all struggling through life with many changes along the way but one constant – their daily meet-ups in the fashion closet where they solve each dilemma with the best of advice.
They are a couple of generations below the SATC ladies so we get to see New York through a whole new perspective.
They are living through the same issues as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte such as race, sexuality, health issues but they deal with each in a much less awkward, patronising and cringey way – because the show isn’t trying too hard it just represents these gals they way all gals their age living in 2022 New York should be represented.
Similarly to SATC, the writing is snappy and witty and literally feels like this is how they talk to each other IRL (that’s in real life to anyone over 30).
Plus, the fashion is spot-on and you will no doubt find a new style icon to reinspire your work-to-night wardrobe.
