FLIER SENSE OF DUTY OUT FOR SEASON

- DAVID YATES

SENSE OF DUTY, 9-2 favourite for the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock next Saturday, will miss the six-furlong test — and the rest of 2022.

The William Haggastrained daughter of Showcasing, successful in a Newbury maiden last August, has gone from strength to strength with a further three victories this season.

Having made a successful comeback at Redcar in April, the threeyear-old carried the colours of her owners St Albans Bloodstock to land the

Listed Cecil Frail Stakes over next weekend’s course and distance the following month before an emphatic victory in the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes on Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate undercard at the end of June.

Sense Of Duty’s upward curve took her to the head of the market for her first foray into Group 1 company, but Haggas, locked in a battle with Newmarket neighbour Charlie Appleby as he seeks a first trainers’ title triumph, reported: “She’s had a setback and is out for the season. She’s made really great strides and I’ve been desperately keen to keep her away from fast ground, which is why she’s been so inactive.

“Now, with soft ground looming, the issue revealed itself on the day we had 60mm of rain.

“It was rather ironic.”

But the master of Newmarket’s Somerville Lodge is anticipating a return to the fray for Sense

Of Duty next year, when she will again have the top sprints in her sights.

“We’re hoping she’ll be back next year to continue her progress,” added Haggas.

THERE was no Hollywood ending to Joe Tuite’s 11-year training career as his final runner, Via Sistina, finished fourth to Regal Reality in the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor.
