‘LET’S FINISH OWLS MIRACLE’

EX-Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws watched the ‘Miracle of Hillsborough’ unfold on Thursday night and then told Darren Moore’s heroes: “Now go and finish the job!”

The Owls produced the greatest comeback in play-off history to overturn Peterborough’s 4-0 first-leg lead to win 5-1 on the night and then prevail 5-3 on penalties.

It really was the stuff of fairy tales and Laws, who managed Wednesday between 2006 and 2009, could scarcely believe what he had witnessed from Moore’s (above) side.

The 61-year-old former Nottingham Forest defender said: “Even now, a few days on, it still feels like a dream.

“Nearly 32,000 fans were there, but did they expect something like that? Maybe they were thinking about just winning the game to at least restore some pride.

“But the spirit and determination the players showed was incredible and they were worthy winners.

“Now they have to finish the job by getting this grand old club promoted at Wembley in the play-off final.

“I think the manner in which they got past Peterborough has galvanised the players, the management staff and the fans into a real unit. They will feel invincible, but they have got to win now.

“There’s a story to be written here... the team who got 96 points, went 23 games unbeaten and still didn’t go up automatically.

“But promotion is there for them at Wembley now and Wednesday supporters alone could fill the place.”

Wednesday were relegated from the top flight in 2000 and not much has gone right since. But they now head to Wembley on May 29.

Laws added: “You have to give Darren Moore massive credit.

“Whoever said he can’t motivate players wants their head testing.”
