The slick sound bites and pre-rehearsed media appearance­s in the run-up to the election have only turned the public off politics, with 47% saying they felt more negative about the future, compared to just 33% who felt more positive. One in five (20%) were “don’t knows”.

Adults from 18-24 were almost twice as likely as those over 65 to regard Miliband as a capable leader (48% v 26%).

But the public’s overall verdict puts the Downing Street race on a knife edge.

Miliband told the Sunday Mirror: “It’s going to be incredibly close. We’re the underdogs in this election. We have been and we always are, but I’m quite happy being the underdog.”

Privately, Labour admits the chances of Mr Miliband becoming PM will be decided by how many seats the party can avoid losing to the Scottish Nationalis­ts north of the border.
