This Modern Family row goes too far

-

There’s a real debate going on here – the ex-fiancé of actress Sofia Vergara wants to make a baby from embryos they created a few years ago. Her eggs, his sperm. Quite a personal deal, no? Nick Loeb, 39, with his new girlfriend, claims they have a right to a life, that they are a living organism. Perhaps, if you’re into that kind of thing.

But Modern Family star Sofia, 42, froze her eggs because cancer treatment she had in 2000 made it harder for her to have children.

She and Loeb wanted to secure their future and not miss out on having a family – her aim was not to set life up for another woman. And why would Loeb’s girlfriend want Sofia’s embryo?

Yes, I’m sensitive to the fact that sometimes people find procreating difficult.

If Loeb and his partner want to use this opportunity then perhaps they should be able to.

But let’s stop and think about Sofia for a moment. She can’t have a natural pregnancy, heartbreaking in itself. Imagine her trauma, not being able to have a baby easily, something that, as women, we just take for granted.

And what would it be like to see your ex-fiancé’s new girlfriend giving birth to your child? Brings a whole new dynamic to “moving on” doesn’t it?

In an open letter sent to the New York Times, Loeb says we shouldn’t define the embryos as life, but property. This is awful, and he certainly loses any credibility right there. Because the fertility issue is just so, so personal. It’s something that brings up so many feelings and has real potential to hurt those who are affected by it.

Anywhere else in the world you would hope another option would be sought to protect the feelings of Sofia. Only Hollywood is a strange place where nothing is ever simple.

Poor, poor Sofia.
