Cometh the Hour Alex arrives on cue

-

BRITON Alex Dowsett is the new holder of the Hour record after a successful attempt at the Manchester Velodrome.

The 26-year-old from Maldon, Essex was bidding to ride the furthest distance in 60 minutes and surpass Australian Rohan Dennis’s record of 52.491 kilometres.

Dowsett recorded 52.937km but the record may last little more than a month though, with four-time Olympic champion and world time-trial champion Sir Bradley Wiggins making an attempt in London on June 7.

Movistar rider Dowsett had to abandon his initial attempt scheduled for late February after fracturing his collarbone in training.

Dowsett, who has haemophilia, rode the Hour to raise awareness of the disease.

He said: “I just want to say thank you to the whole crowd because the last five minutes it was all you guys.

“The first 30 minutes were easy – easier compared to what I expected. I just had to stay disciplined.”

Moreno Hofland charged to victory on stage two of the Tour de Yorkshire.

The Dutchman won by a bike length after the 174km-stage from Selby to York to earn a first win of the season for his LottoNL-Jumbo team.

In a sprint finish, he got up to beat Matteo Pelucchi of IAM Cycling and Giant Alpecin’s Ramon Sinkeldam.
