THE JO Poll shows shift

Delighted LEAVE... disappoint­ed LEAVE...

THE man accused of murdering MP Jo Cox appeared in court yesterday and gave his name as “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain.”

Tommy Mair, 52 – seen for the first time since the killing – stared straight ahead as he made the barely audible remark at a packed Westminste­r Magistrate­s’ Court in London.

He repeated the phrase in full when asked again for his name by Emma Arbuthnot, one of Britain’s most senior magistrate­s and wife of Tory peer James Arbuthnot.

It was the only time he spoke in a hearing lasting under half an hour.

The bearded out-of-work gardener stayed silent when asked for his address and his date of birth.

He stood in a prison issue grey sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms, cuffed to a guard in the bullet-proof dock. Prosecutor David Cawthorne outlined the case against him.

The results of a ComRes poll for the Sunday Mirror today show a move in favour of staying in the EU as news of the shooting broke.

Jo, 41, was in the pro-Remain camp. And the poll results show the death of the hugely popular mum of two could have a direct effect on Thursday’s ballot.

Our pollsters were asking questions on the EU referendum at the precise time news broke of the attack on the Batley and Spen Labour MP at 2pm on Thursday.

ComRes analysts were amazed when the results coming in after two o’clock began to show a marked change of view. Before Jo was shot 45 per cent of those polled said they would be “delighted” if the UK voted to leave the EU.

That dropped to 38 per cent after 2pm – and the Remain camp got an astonishin­g nine point boost from those saying they would be delighted if we stayed.

ComRes chairman Andrew Hawkins said this could indicate a major change in campaign fortunes. He said: “All it requires is for a marginal change to swing the vote from Leave to Remain.”
