Springwatch... birds and the bee’s knees

-

This week our Goggleboxers Jimmy Coleman, partner Julie and their 16-year-old daughter Phoebe give us their thoughts on the final episode of the BBC’s Springwatch... JIMMY: You don’t want to miss this, Julie. Martin Hughes-Games just said: “It’s going to be wild and unpredictable to the very end.” Now that’s enthusiasm for you. JULIE: I could literally watch this year-round. What am I going to do? I look out of the kitchen window and see birds going here and there. But with this, I can literally watch a nest from our living room and see the eggs incubating. It’s just fascinating. PHOEBE: The owls are very cute but I’d rather watch Big Brother. JULIE: Phoebe! Who cares about some wannabe? This is the best live TV you can get. Look at this amazing sparrowhawk’s nest. Wow, one of the eggs is hatching. PHOEBE: God. Is that a leg? JULIE: Yes, Phoebe, and a head. It’s the One Born Every Minute of the bird world. PHOEBE: Did they just say the mother swallows her chick’s own yolk sac? Argh... JULIE: It’s brilliant how they’ve got a microphone in the nest so you can actually hear the hatching. PHOEBE: Ah, I want a baby chick.

The childhood programme that shaped my youth was… A drama series called Angels that followed student nurses through their training. Watching it, I knew immediately that I wanted to work in the healthcare profession. Followed by a quick stint in hospital to have my appendix removed at 12, my fate was sealed! The programme my other half and I are most at odds about is… MasterChef. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in awe of the talent and I love fine dining but he really could watch it all night every night (and sometimes does!). I’d rather be out sampling the dishes. My guilty pleasure is… JIMMY: Great timing. Three weeks into filming and the chick’s hatching. PHOEBE: Look at Chris’s wacky shirt... JIMMY: Look at Monty the Osprey more like. Along comes this new lady osprey and there’s us thinking he’s going to ditch his long-term bird. It really is a love triangle. JULIE: I can’t believe he’s got two women incubating his eggs. What a player. JIMMY: There’s more drama in Springwatch than an episode of EastEnders. JULIE: And that’s why I love it. I’m not interested in those stickleback fish though. The things below water do nothing for me. But I love these wonderful birds. That single mum, the blue tit, has brought her young more than most of the two-parent families. JIMMY: Blimey, look at the stoat dragging a rabbit and pulling out a woodpecker. They must be twice her size. PHOEBE: This is the bit I could do without. I don’t want to see things being eaten. Yuck! JULIE: That’s nature for you, Phoebe. JIMMY: This is like nature on your doorstep, but I think Attenborough still has the edge. JULIE: Nonsense. What could be more wonderful than a golden eagle and her babies? Huge praise to Springwatch. The last series I watched religiously and loved was… My favourite actor on the box is… Damian Lewis. He plays such diverse roles and is always absolutely convincing. I thought his part as Brody in Homeland was one of his best. Pure genius.
