ENGLAND’S SLO BURNER

-

WALES players claimed England lacked passion and a sense of patriotism – but ended up getting their Dai wiped.

I’ve no idea why such a fuss is made of patriotism - it’s the last refuge of a scoundrel according to Samuel Johnson, although to this day no-one is quite sure what he meant or even who he played for.

Despite losing to England, Wales are still long odds-on to qualify – this must be the easiest group to get out of since the Sugababes.

There are three challenges and if you do the business in one of them it’s happy days. And it’s the same in Euro ’16 too. What it means is that all the big teams plus England and Wales will qualify for the next stage and Scottish fans will have to continue putting our bins out for us until we return.

Euro ’16 has been a damp squib. A very damp squib.

Every game is a repeat of the one before. The only thing that changes is the hair colour of the one good-looking girl the pervy cameraman manages to pick out in the crowd.

If you don’t believe me, come and look at the stills on my wall. Yes, there have been upsets – Northern Ireland beating Ukraine, Hungary beating Austria, and England beating anyone – but they’re not really upsets, are they?

Not unless, you’re Ukraine, Austria, or anyone beaten by England.

England and Wales play their final group matches tomorrow – against Slovakia and Russia respectively – and the great news is that both matches kick-off at the same time so we’ll only have to watch one. In my case Sky 1. I had high hopes for Russia immediately before the tournament but something seems to be missing – probably the whole squad immediately after the tournament.

But they are surely too big at 8-5 to beat a Welsh side who in Lens on Thursday pulled off a minor miracle – for 20 minutes they made England look half-decent.

Jamie Vardy & Co are ridiculously short to beat the Slovaks. Every punter knows by now not to back England at odds-on. How do they know this? I keep telling them, that’s how.

Let’s not forget that a draw will almost certainly be enough to put both sides through.
