Sixth formers want their say - to stay in EU

-

STUDENTS in the sixth form at Backwell School in Backwell, near Bristol, gave their views and said freedom of movement, the economy and a sensible immigration policy are reasons for staying in the EU. And they were angry at not being allowed to vote... Charlie Okeden, 17, who wants to be an engineer or architect, said: “The EU is slow and not perfect, but it’s better than nothing. This is the first century where there has been no war in Europe. London is the trade capital of Europe. We would have no chance of competing if we leave.” Dan Bewley, 17, who wants to study politics at uni, said: “I would vote Remain. If we aren’t able to stay in the EU and have a strong economy, my generation would be at risk of not being able to get jobs.” Ella Ferris, 16, who wants to study law, favours more border controls but wants to stay in. She said: “I am interested in studying abroad so I’m concerned that if we leave I would have to get a visa.” Jonathan Gathercole, 17, fears leaving is “a huge risk”. He said: “I want to spend time in Europe and travel and it will be much easier if we are part of the EU.” Liv Haly, 17, who plans to go to drama school, said: “My birthday is in two months and I’m really annoyed I can’t vote. Immigration is a main issue. There do need to be changes and it should be in moderation, but it is a good thing.” Nell Lathe, 17, who wants to study economics, said: “There is no reason why we should leave. It’s not like we are in turmoil.” Jenny Cao, 17, said: “The Out campaign is mainly focused on immigration, but what about the people who have left the UK to live in other countries?” Ollie Povey, 17, wants to study history at uni. He thinks staying in is wise, but added: “Immigration needs to be dealt with. Leave campaigners are talking about border control and, especially with recent attacks in Turkey and Paris, I think it’s fair enough.” Jonathan Evans, 17, who wants to do engineering, said: “I can get married or have children but I can’t put my name on a ballot paper.”
