NIGEL THOMPSON MARJORIE YUE Hackage deal
Protect your data from cyber criminals abroad
You’re on holiday abroad, relaxing in the hotel bar with a drink and a snack... It’s the perfect time to catch up with some emails, check the footie results and post some photos to show your friends what a great time you’re having.
But could this make you an unknowing victim of crime?
Recent news reports have revealed a cyber campaign targeting hotels across Europe and the Middle East, where criminals are using hotel wi-fi networks to gain access to tourists’ data, including email addresses, and to gather online credentials.
Now the government’s Cyber Aware campaign is encouraging Brits heading overseas this autumn and winter to adopt a set of simple, secure online practices to protect them from cyber criminals.
The tips are based on expert advice from the National Cyber Security Centre, a part of the government’s intelligence and security organisation GCHQ in Cheltenham.
Don’t use public wi-fi to transfer sensitive information such as card details – hackers can set-up fake wi-fi hotspots which might enable them to intercept your info.
Install the latest software and app updates – they contain vital security upgrades which help protect your devices from viruses and hackers.
Use a strong, separate password for your email account – hackers can use your email to access many of your personal accounts, by asking for your password to be reset, and find out personal information such as your bank details, address or date of birth, leaving you vulnerable.
Secure your tablet or smartphone with a screen lock – this provides an extra layer of security. Don’t use 1234 or an L-shaped pattern, which are easy for other people to guess.
Always back up your most important data – protect your photos and key documents by saving them to an external hard drive or a cloud-based storage system. ■■More info at cyberaware.gov.uk stoneskimming.com ba.com A stylish vacuum flask that will keep your drinks cold for 25hrs or hot for 12hrs.
