Peter Kay: We made it up driving around

Comic’s video message on Car Share

PETER Kay thrilled fans by breaking his silence for the first time since cancelling his comedy tour.

The funnyman looked relaxed and happy in a video message introducin­g the final two episodes of his hit sitcom Car Share at a charity screening.

The Phoenix Nights star, 44, told a capacity audience at Blackpool Opera House the episodes were “a bit different”.

He said of the first episode: “We used to drive around quite a bit and we just wanted to see what would happen if we filmed a whole journey without a script, just making it up.”

But in the second one fans finally see what happens in the will-they-won’t- they relationsh­ip between Kay’s supermarke­t assistant manager John Redmond and his passenger Kayleigh Kitson, played by Sian Gibson.

Friday’s screening, the first of three, won warm praise for Kay, who pulled the BRILLIANT Peter Kay and Sian Gibson are on top form and had the 3,000strong audience in stitches from start to end.

The unscripted episode plug on a 113-gig stand-up tour in December “due to unforeseen family circumstan­ces”. A million tickets had already been sold.

After the screening fans hailed Kay a comedy genius. One posted: “Never showing the workmates sparking off each other and cracking gags was a joy. The last episode has a hilarious opening as John tries to patch things up with Kayleigh, who has declared her love for him. TV viewers won’t see what happens until May – but it’s well worth the wait. in my life laughed so much and so honoured to watch the perfect final ending to Car Share.” The showings are raising money for the Lily Foundation, which treats children with mitochondr­ial disease. In a statement before the shows, dadof-one Kay said: “I’ve had first-hand experience of the foundation’s work and I’m proud to raise both awareness and much-needed funds to help with the inspiring work they provide to children and their families.” The two episodes will be on BBC1 in May. phil.cardy@ trinitymir­ror.com
