Bale: Batman to fat man on a potato diet
BATMAN star Christian Bale loved bingeing on pies and potatoes to play heavyweight US politician Dick Cheney – until his body hit the pain barrier.
Bale – tipped to win an Oscar for Vice – needed to pile on 3st 4lb to play the former vice-president, 77.
The actor, 44, said: “It’s a dream come true for two weeks then your body goes ‘Give it a rest.’ You mentally go, ‘ Just gorge, just gorge’.”
“My favourite food was potatoes – they’re healthy. And a good pie as well.
“You have that and you stuff yourself as much as you can. I loved how crazy the idea of playing Dick Cheney was, given his size.”
It’s not the first time the Welshman has gone to extreme lengths for a role – he famously lost 4st for 2004’s The Machinist.
