One party...and we’re worn out
IMAGE conscious Brits will spend £3.5billion on new clothes for the Christmas party season – but 8 million items will only be worn once.
A third of us wouldn’t be seen dead in last year’s party outfit, a new study shows. And 65 per cent buy at least one new item, spending an average £106. But a quarter of those won’t wear it twice.
The research by Oxfam was to highlight the cost of “fast fashion” – high speed, low cost manufacturing based on celebrity looks.
It leads to 92million tonnes of clothing waste being dumped in landfill every year – that’s one truck of textiles per second.
Supermodel Kate Moss, singer Una Healy, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and designer Stella McCartney all back Oxfam’s sustainable party wear campaign.
Singer Ellie Goulding donated a little black Isabel Marant dress, said: “When you fall out of love with an outfit, let someone else fall in love with it.”
Oxfam’s Fee Gilfeather said: “Our shops are stocked with glamorous pieces which help save the planet.”
