Pig or­gans in heart op hope

Pig hearts could soon be trans­planted into peo­ple af­ter sci­en­tists ran suc­cess­ful tri­als with ba­boons. Two mon­keys were kept alive for more than six months fol­low­ing the heart ops – three times longer than the pre­vi­ous record.

Ex­perts say the re­search suc­cess, pub­lished in the jour­nal Na­ture, could lead to sim­i­lar pro­ce­dures on hu­man pa­tients.
