lead. Luis’s fine switch of play finally got Pedro running towards City’s goal. He worked the ball inside to Willian and then Marcos Alonso got involved before Hazard took possession.

When the Belgian eased a low pass into the heart of City’s penalty area, Kante reacted first and his ruthless first-time finish into the roof of the net gave Ederson no chance.

It took City time to recover. Willian tested Ederson with a wickedly whipped free-kick from 25 yards on the restart.

And after Kante had led another Chelsea attack, Willian should have done better than fire a weak finish straight at Ederson.

Guardiola sent on Gabriel Jesus for a disappointed Sane seven minutes into the second period. Kyle Walker’s free-kick forced Kepa into a save as the visitors started to increase the tempo.

When City lost David Silva with a hamstring strain, they lost some impetus.

The visitors complained that referee Michael Oliver got it wrong when he gave a 78thminute corner after deciding that sub Ross Barkley’s shot had taken a slight deflection.

But the City boss will be even more angry that Luis was allowed to smuggle himself to the near post to meet Hazard’s delivery with a deft flick of his head to find the far corner.
