Primary is first school with foodbank for hungry kids

- BY AMY SHARPE

A PRIMARY school is believed to be the first to set up its own foodbank.

Head Debbie Whiting started it after noticing pupils turn up hungry, ask for help to get food, and even steal other kids’ packed lunches.

Parents struggling under Tory cuts and Universal Credit delays get food and cooking classes at North Denes Primary in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Debbie said: “We live in a deprived coastal area. Services countywide and countrywide have been cut. You can’t learn if you’re hungry.” Ms Whiting introduced a clothes bank and free toast for children two years ago – which she believes helped improve SATs results.

One mum with two children at the school said the school helped when she hit “rock bottom” after running out of money and was “crying for days”.
