Two die in house fire Girl, 8, and mother are killed by blaze

Emergency vehicles at scene yesterday A MOTHER and her eight-yearold daughter died early yesterday in a blaze at their home.

Firefighte­rs rescued a boy of five and a 34-year-old man from the home and they were rushed to hospital, suffering serious injuries.

A woman of 53 escaped unhurt. The tragic mother, 33, and the other victims are all believed to be members of the same family. Fire crews, ambulances and police were called to the blaze in the village of Collingham, near Newark, Notts, just after 7am.

Neighbour Vera Routledge said: “I could smell the smoke. A mum, dad, two children and a granny live there.

“I don’t see a lot of them as they keep themselves to themselves.” Chief Insp Rich Stapleford said paramedics treated victims at the scene and en route to hospital.

He added Collingham, near the river Trent, is a “very close knit community – and this includes some of the fire crews who responded”.

Mr Stapleford said: “This will hit the village hard. Our thoughts are with the victims and the community.”

The fire brigade said the cause of the blaze was being investigat­ed.
