MARC MY WORDS Bielsa’s vow after Leeds given big wake-up call

- By SIMON BIRD at Elland Road

MARCELO BIELSA insisted Leeds will be back to their best after Hull wrecked their seven-game winning streak.

The Championship leaders were dismantled by a brilliant performance from Nigel Adkins’ rejuvenated Hull – with winger Jarrod Bowen the star.

Bowen struck twice – and proved why he is a January transfer target for the Elland Road club, Tottenham, Everton and Brighton.

The visitors’ intensity and organisation restricted the runaway leaders to very few chances, leaving Bielsa admitting they need a reaction at Nottingham Forest on New Years’ Day.

Leeds remain three points clear and Bielsa said: “Our expectation is to get positive results, and that means getting one on Tuesday.” Bielsa was disappointed it was the first time since August his side has failed to score.

He said: “This was not much different from the other games we have played. Usually we have three times more chances to score than the opponent.

“We had eight or nine chances to score and that is not high with the possession we had.

“We dominated the game. They could have scored more but I don’t think we played badly defensively.”

Bielsa is in the market for a new winger after Samuel Saiz agreed a loan deal to join Getafe in January.

Young s t e r Bowen is sought after and proved why. Adkins’ men competed well and attacked swiftly down the wings after winning possession.

Kamil Grosicki was a danger on the left, and curled in a deep cross with his right foot, which Will Keane battled for, occupying two defenders. Bowen, 22, made no mistake when the ball fell

to him 10 yards out to give Hull a 25th-minute lead. City were positive, quick on the break and aggressive in the challenge, smothering the table-toppers.

It wasn’t a surprise when they doubled their lead through Bowen in the 58th minute.

Grosicki was the creator again, speeding to the byeline and crossing to sub Jon

Toral whose near- post effort was blocked. Bowen arrived late to smash home through the bodies.

Leeds had little to offer in attack until after the hour but had two shots cleared off the line, the best from Tyler Roberts with Eric Lichaj blocking.

Pablo Hernandez came closest in the first half for Leeds, with a dribble and shot that David Marshall palmed away.

Hull boss Adkins said: “It emphasises the spirit we have in the squad and Will Keane up top was exceptional and the counter- attacking threat we have was excellent.

“This is a tough place to come, an outstanding side. But tactically we were good.

“Our centre- halves were immense, the work ethic was right and the whole squad contributed. We are on a good run of form.

“The objective is to stabilise and stay in this division.”
