I told Aaron’s agent he couldn’t go wrong at Juve. He’s got a great chance of ruling Europe

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

IAN RUSH believes Aaron Ramsey’s surprise move to Juventus can see him follow in Welsh compatriot Gareth Bale’s shoes and become a Champions League winner.

Despite only spending one season at Juve, Rush was quick to offer his seal of approval to the Gunner for the forthcoming summer move to Turin.

He also revealed that Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were also desperate to sign the 28-year-old, once Arsenal announced they were prepared to allow the midfielder’s contract to run down.

“Aaron’s agent rang me about Juventus and I told him they couldn’t go wrong choosing to go to Italy. They have great support and they will have a fantastic chance of winning the Champions League,” said Rush.

“I said it would be a great move for him. I know that Bayern Munich and PSG also wanted him which made Arsenal’s decision even more strange.

“Surely when you have three huge clubs wanting to sign your player he must be a bit special? It’s a team that will suit his style of play. He will also have Cristiano Ronaldo feeding off him.

“I still have ties with the club and the Agnelli family are in control as they were when I was there. They love their football and believe it should be played the right way.

“Their goal is to win the Champions League. That will be the case again next season when Ramsey is there.

“Aaron has seen Gareth Bale win the Champions League and he would love to do the same. That would be a great achievement for him.”

And, as another lauded Welshman John Charles discovered, overed, hero status can come your our way with

The Old Lady.

“John Charles is still till revered in Turin,” added Rush. ush. “He was simply the best. I know when I was there ‘ The

Gentle Giant’ was as regarded as the best ever foreigner to play in Italy, ahead of Diego

Maradona and

Michel Platini. He was at

Juventus for five years. s. He used to come out and see me when I was at Juventus. He was treated like a god and rightly so.

“Quality players only come along so often and it’s t’s amazing to think Aaron Ramsey msey and I have both followed in n the great

John Charles’ footsteps otsteps by wearing the Juventus shirt. My dad always thought he was the best player ever because he could play centre-half or centre-forward. The only reason why Wales lost to Brazil in the 1958 World Cup quarter-final was because John Charles was injured.”

Ramsey’s impending move to Juventus also gives Rush ( below) the opportunity to put the record straight on his season-long stay in Italy before rejoining Liverpool – one that has often been reported as a disaster.

But he maintained: “It was the best move I made, not because of the financial rewards, but because I learned more about European football in those 12 months mont than I would have done staying in England. I came back a better player and that helped myself and a Liverpool, especially in Europ European games.

““Diego Maradona was the t top league scorer that season with 15 for Napoli and I got seven. I ended up with 14 goals in total, which was good going when the game was very defen defensive.”

It was w also a time when players didn’t have the support and help which is the norm these days.

“I co couldn’t speak Italian and no one spo spoke English. Aaron will be well looked looke after, and rightly so.

“He is also al coming into a team that will win th the league again and again. “I’m look looking forward to going back to Juvent Juventus to see him play.”
