Boldly go on a star trek into darkness for half-term family fun in North Yorkshire. Once the sun goes down, enterprisi­ng visitors to the fourth annual Dark Skies Festival, which runs from February 15 to March 3, can try Milky Way gazing, Klingon – sorry, cling on – to ziplines and, go on wildlife and ghost walks.

The events are happening across the county’s four protected areas – North York Moors National Park, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Nidderdale Area of Outstandin­g Natural Beauty and Howardian Hills Area of Outstandin­g Natural Beauty.

New activities for 2019 will include brushing up on night photograph­y skills and canoe trips and off-road bike rides to see how the sky is pockmarked with stars.

Observing the moon will be a key feature of this year’s festival to coincide with the 50th anniversar­y of the first lunar landing by Apollo 11, and to mark a supermoon being visible on February 19.

Visitors can catch a moonbeam up at Hawes, enjoying a glass of wine while viewing through powerful telescopes.
