Boldly go on a star trek into darkness for half-term family fun in North Yorkshire. Once the sun goes down, enterprising visitors to the fourth annual Dark Skies Festival, which runs from February 15 to March 3, can try Milky Way gazing, Klingon – sorry, cling on – to ziplines and, go on wildlife and ghost walks.
The events are happening across the county’s four protected areas – North York Moors National Park, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
New activities for 2019 will include brushing up on night photography skills and canoe trips and off-road bike rides to see how the sky is pockmarked with stars.
Observing the moon will be a key feature of this year’s festival to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing by Apollo 11, and to mark a supermoon being visible on February 19.
Visitors can catch a moonbeam up at Hawes, enjoying a glass of wine while viewing through powerful telescopes.
Or there’s lunar geocaching – that’s a treasure hunt where you follow GPS co-ordinates – at Danby and a Big Moon mountain cycle race in Swaledale. For campers there’s a
