Protect your secrets from the wi-fi raiders
Cyber attacks can strike at any time and we are all vulnerable – especially on holiday. Logging in to free public wi-fi at airports, hotels and cafes has become the norm as we avoid eating into our mobile data allowances or risk roaming charges.
If we don’t take the right precautions to protect our personal information when we are away, we could be hacked. Even passwords don’t guarantee protection.
Simon Migliano, head of research at virtual private network review site Top10VPN. com, says: “Cyber criminals know all the tricks in the book. They can easily intercept communications between the public wi-fi user and the wi-fi router and capture all your data.”
Here are his top tips to stay safe on public wifi.
Stick to well-known networks. If you’ve used a cafe or hotel before, go there. The more networks you sign on to, the more vulnerable you are.
Avoid sites that use unencrypted HTTP. Stick to websites that start with “HTTPS” in the address bar – the “S” stands for secure. They encrypt the connection between your computer and the site you are visiting, so people can’t snoop.
Don’t hand over personal details. Connect to a service you are already registered for.
Limit file sharing and AirDrop. As tempting as it is to send photos, turn off both options on your device.
Use antivirus software. It will also detect dodgy malware that could get into your system and cause havoc via a shared network.
Use the firewall. It helps as a barrier protecting your devices from malware threats.
Only do online shopping at home. Your bank details could be stolen.
Turn off automatic wi- fi. You could inadvertently connect to networks you wouldn’t normally use.
Use a VPN. It is the safest way to browse as it encrypts data travelling to and from your devices.
