Pilgrim dies in sea after 500mile trek

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

A MAN has drowned in the sea after finishing a religious pilgrimage.

Timothy Kelleher, 35, who had done a 500-mile trek from France to Spain known as the Way of Saint James, was overcome by fierce currents off the Spanish coast.

Timothy, from Ballyvourney in Co Cork in the Irish Republic, was with two women who raised the alarm when they saw he was struggling.

Locals at Cabo Finisterre in north-west Spain pulled him from the sea and spent 40 minutes trying to revive him before a doctor arrived and declared him dead.

The local mayor said: “The sea was rough.”

Another pilgrim was killed in similar circumstances in 2010.
