Producers of the last Star Wars instalment – 2017’s The Last Jedi – hit the jackpot when they stumbled upon South America’s Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia, the largest in the world at half the size of Wales.

They appear in the movie like a shimmering frozen desert and provided the perfect backdrop for Planet Crait in a thrilling action scene.

Visitors can stand among 1,000-year-old cacti on the slopes of Isla Incahuasi and bed down at the Hotel de Sal Luna Salada, made of salt.
