NO FEAR...AND THAT’S SCARY! Ballsy Blades frighten Prem elite, says legend Deane

- BY RICHARd EdWARds

BRIAN DEANE is backing a ‘zero respect’ policy to propel Sheffield United to Premier League safety.

The former Blades favourite has been impressed by the club’s start to the season.

And he believes they’re capable of giving Arsenal a fright at Bramall Lane tomorrow night – after running table-toppers Liverpool close last month.

All with a squad that remains largely unchanged from the one that last season stormed the Championship under boss Chris Wilder.

And it’s this continuity that Deane (above) reckons will see the Blades keep their heads above water in their first season back in the big time.

“They’re playing the kind of football that they were playing last season,” said Deane, who made over 200 appearances for the Yorkshire side.

“They seem to have coped well with the step up. They’re very much a reflection of the manager – he trusts the players and the players trust him.

“He’s going to get what he needs out of them. I think he has done the right thing by not spending excessively. You only have to look at what happened to Fulham last season. They spent huge amounts and then lost the value of the players by getting relegated. “Blades have got nothing to lose by taking the game to Arsenal.

“Look at the game against Liverpool – they should have had a draw. They just need to play the game, they’ve nothing to fear.

“It’s refreshing to see a side come up and not just focus on putting 10 men behind the ball. They’re actually going out there and having a go.”

Despite losing back-to-back matches at Bramall Lane to Southampton and Liverpool, neither result reflected the way that Wilder’s side performed.

And a win at Everton coupled with a point at Stamford Bridge against high-flying Chelsea has handed Wilder (right) and Co the belief that they can do far more than simply survive this season.

Deane is backing the hostile atmosphere generated at home to act as a 12th man as the campaign progresses.

“The crowd will be important all year,” Deane said. “It’s a tight ground and the fans have a huge role to play.

“It’s a great atmosphere when you’re at

Bramall Lane when it’s full

– and it will be full all season.

“These guys are now coming to terms with the fact that they are Premier League players.

“They need to bel ieve in themselves and get on with what they’re doing.

“If they can do that then I think they’ll be a match for anyone in this league.”
