GYLFI SIGURDSSON must have been boiling with rage to have carried the can for Everton’s recent slump – but his response was ice-cold.
After being dropped to the bench by under- pressure boss Marco Silva (above), Icelandic star Sigurdsson was thrown on late in the game as the impressive Alex Iwobi made way.
But, with one classy movement, Sigurdsson lifted the roof off Goodison Park, smashing a rising right-foot drive past West Ham keeper Roberto.
The relief brought by the spectacular strike even eclipsed the feeling of joy that erupted after Brazilian winger Bernard had given Everton a 16th-minute lead with a mesmerising dribble and finish against the powder-puff Hammers. Still, given the choice today, Silva would probably make the same decision.
For Sigurdsson’s replacement in the creative No.10 role – Iwobi – was a central figure as Everton finally shook off their shackles after a £200million spend since the manager’s arrival.
The Toffees’ goal return in recent weeks had been shocking, with just two scored in four straight Premier League defeats in the last month.
Against a woeful West Ham side, who just didn’t turn up, Everton’s creativity was unstoppable.
